Aaron Jafet Dominguez (born June 24, 1994)[1][2] is an American actor and film director, best known for his portrayal of Oscar Torres on Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building.
Early life[edit]
Aaron Dominguez is an American actor of Venezuelan descent, born and raised in the United States. He was born to Nicholas and Blanca Dominguez, both of whom were involved in the performing arts. Nicholas was a professional jazz and ballet dancer who toured with Janet Jackson in the 1980s,[1] while Blanca was a working actress and musician. The couple met in theater school and worked at Radio Caracas TV, Venezuela's most important independent television station until it was shut down by Hugo Chávez’s government in 2010.
As a child Dominguez grew up in an artistic household and was immersed in the performing arts from a young age. He, along with his brother Stephano Jonas Dominguez and sister Raquel Dominguez, performed extensively in his parents' musical theater company. Despite this, Dominguez initially considered pursuing a career in sports journalism, partly influenced by his parents' struggle to work in a new country after moving from Miami to the suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia.
However, after realizing that sports journalism wasn't for him, Dominguez shifted his focus back to local theater. Although he began doing commercial acting work in Miami at a young age, it took him a while to fully embrace the actor's life. Eventually, he pursued his passion for acting and has since appeared in various film and television projects.
Career[edit]
Early career[edit]
Dominguez's early film work includes an early version of the film Breathe, directed by recurring collaborator Tabiyus, as well as Codes Abided, Pink Opaque, and With Interest, which was Dominguez directorial debut.[3] He has also had guest starring roles in television series such as CBS's Seal Team and NCIS: New Orleans. In 2019, he made his theatrical debut as Staff Sergeant Eddie Dominguez in Shaft alongside Samuel L. Jackson and Jessie Usher.
Breakthrough[edit]
In 2021, Dominguez starred as Emmanuel in Snapchat series Two Sides: Unfaithful. The show received favorable reviews and was nominated for an (NAACP Image Award) for Outstanding Short-Form Series – Comedy or Drama at the 53rd NAACP Image Awards.[4]
His breakout role came when he booked the role of Oscar Torres in season one of Hulu's Only Murders in the Building,[5] alongside Selena Gomez, Steve Martin, and Martin Short.[6] The show received a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 105 critic reviews,[7] and Dominguez received his first Screen Actors Guild Nomination along with the cast for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.[8] He received an Imagen Awards nomination for Best Supporting Actor – Comedy (Television).[9] Upon the success of the first season, controversy and public outcry broke out on several media outlets when Dominguez's character was not in season two.[10] Speculation as to whether his character will return in Season 3 has yet to be confirmed.[11][12][13] Despite his success in a comedy-driven show, Dominguez is not one to be tied to a genre.
Recent Projects[edit]
In July 2022 it was announced that Dominguez was cast in the directorial debut of Tyrrell Shaffner's film Katie's Mom.[14] The film is about a divorcée, played by Dina Meyer, whose holiday celebration with her adult children derails when she falls for her daughter's charming new boyfriend, played by Dominguez.
Dominguez has expanded his acting portfolio with recent roles in several notable productions.[15] In A24's The Inspection, he played the supporting role of Castro, a conflicted soldier torn between military culture and his own moral compass.[16] Dominguez secured the part after reaching out to director Elegance Bratton on Instagram while working on Only Murders in the Building.[17]
Originally penned to star in Season 3 before it's cancelation, Dominguez guest-starred in the series finale of HBO Max's Gossip Girl as Phillip Price.[18] Additionally, he recently completed filming the Amazon Studios rom-com Sitting in Bars With Cake, directed by Trish Sie.[19] The film features Dominguez alongside a star-studded cast that includes Odessa A'zion, Yara Shahidi, Maia Mitchell, Adina Porter, Ron Livingston, Bette Midler, and Navid Negahban.
Personal life[edit]
Dominguez is the youngest of three siblings born to Nicholas and Blanca Dominguez. His older brother Stephano Dominguez, who goes by the stage name Jona Ekko, is an actor and music artist, while his sister Raquel Dominguez is also an actress.
Raquel has appeared on various television networks, including CBS' All Rise, Fox's The Resident, and NBC's Law & Order Special Victims Unit. She has also co-starred in Netflix's A California Christmas: City Lights.[20]
Beyond his family and acting career, Dominguez keeps a relatively low profile and has not shared many details about his personal life with the public.
