Abdul Hamid Sadka FIET FBCS (born July 1968) is a British Lebanese academician, Telecommunications engineer, Professor of visual media technologies, and the founding Director of Aston Digital Futures Institute [2] at Aston University.

Early life and education

Sadka grew up in Tripoli, Lebanon where he was French educated in private schools at both primary and secondary levels. He studied Computer & Communications Engineering at the American University of Beirut from which he obtained a Bachelor of Engineering in 1990. He joined the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey where he received a Master of Engineering in Computer Engineering in 1993. He then became a doctoral researcher at the University of Surrey, UK where he completed a PhD in Electronic and Electrical Engineering in October 1997. His PhD dissertation was on error control strategies in block-transform video codecs.[3]

Career

Sadka became research assistant at the University of Surrey in 1997 and shortly afterwards was then appointed a Lecturer in Multimedia Systems. He was promoted to Reader in 2004 before he joined Brunel University London in 2006 as Professor and Head of Electronic and Computer Engineering.[4] In 2018, Sadka was appointed as the director of Brunel's digital science & technology hub,[5] and was subsequently appointed as the founding Director of Brunel's institute of digital futures;[6] the institute was officially launched in November 2020.[7] As of September 2023, he is the founding Director of Aston Digital Futures Institute [8] at Aston University.

Sadka's most eminent contributions to the field of video processing have been in error resilient video compression, model-based video compression and 3D image acquisition. He and his Brunel team have developed a proprietary single-aperture Holoscopic 3D acquisition system capable of producing a true light-field representation of 3D objects with full motion parallax.[9] An enhanced version of the camera has been exploited in an international partnership during the period 2016-2020 for the preservation and curation of Qatar cultural heritage assets.[10] In 2020, Sadka and his team have developed an AI-enabled X-ray image analytics algorithm for the detection of respiratory diseases including COVID-19.[11] In May 2022, he featured in a podcast on Radio 3Fach [12] where he spoke about his joint work with the University of Leicester for detecting depression on Twitter.[13]

Since May 2021 until July 2023, Sadka has co-chaired the West London Further Education-Higher Education partnership digital skills group aiming at bridging the skills gap in digital tech industries with a view to accelerating workforce training for West London employers as part of post-COVID-19 recovery. In a meeting with MP Paul Scully in October 2023, then Minister for Tech and Digital Economy, he highlighted the need to focus on AI skills across the UK's workforce.[14] In 2019, he became an associated member on the steering board of the New European Media initiative after having done a first spell as elected member during the period 2011-2014.[15] Sadka is a licensed Amateur radio operator in both UK and Turkey.

Selected publications

Sadka has authored a book on compressed video communications,[16] co-edited 2 books addressing data analytics for cultural heritage [17] and recent trends in computer applications.[18] His journal publications include:
