Dr. Abdul Salaam (born Leo McCallum; August 18, 1929 – June 22, 2018) was an American dentist, community activist, and religious pioneer who played a foundational role in the establishment of the Muslim community in Newark, New Jersey, and on the East Coast of the United States.[1] He is widely recognized for his close associations with key 20th-century historical figures, including Malcolm X and Elijah Muhammad.[1] In 2022, the City of Newark permanently honored his legacy by renaming a portion of Johnson Avenue to "Dr. Abdul Salaam Way."[2]

Early life and education

Leo McCallum was raised in Newark, New Jersey. He pursued a career in dentistry and enrolled at the Columbia University School of Dental Medicine. Graduating in 1956, he achieved a historic milestone as the only Black student enrolled at the dental school during an eight-year period.[1] Following his graduation, he established his dental practice on Johnson Avenue in Newark.[2]

Religious leadership and activism

In 1957, McCallum embraced Islam within the Nation of Islam and adopted the name Abdul Salaam. His wife, Khadijah Salaam (born Edwina Marshall), joined him in the faith that same year.[1]

Dr. Salaam quickly became a prominent figure in the movement. He served as the Fruit of Islam (FOI) Captain and an assistant Minister at Newark's Temple No. 25. He worked closely alongside Malcolm X during Malcolm's frequent travels to the New Jersey and New York areas.[1] He was notably involved in prominent civil rights and community organizing efforts during the height of the civil rights movement on the East Coast.

Recognizing his professional skills and leadership, Elijah Muhammad requested that Dr. Salaam and Sister Khadijah relocate to Chicago, Illinois. There, Dr. Salaam served as the personal dentist to Elijah Muhammad, Malcolm X, and Louis Farrakhan.[1] Simultaneously, Sister Khadijah helped manage local Islamic businesses and initiatives.

Legacy

Dr. Salaam is remembered as a pioneering professional who bridged the gap between medical practice and grassroots community empowerment.

On October 22, 2022, the City of Newark formally recognized Dr. Salaam's decades of service and historical impact by posthumously renaming a section of Johnson Avenue—where he originally opened his practice—to Dr. Abdul Salaam Way.[2]
