Abe Matamoros (/ɑːbɛ/; born December 16, 1992) is an American entrepreneur and retired soccer player.[2][3][1] [4] He is a founder of EllieGrid Inc. and serves as its chief executive officer.[5] [6] Matamoros played soccer for the Houston Dynamo.[1] In 2019, Matamoros was selected to be on the Forbes 30 under 30 list.[5][7][8]
Early life
Matamoros was born on December 16, 1992 in Houston, Texas.[1] He grew up in Mexico City and moved to Houston at the age of 8.[2] He attended Strake Jesuit High School. During his senior year he trained with the Houston Dynamo first team and played games with them in MLS Reserve League games.[1] [9][10] He received a scholarship to attend the University of Tulsa where he played for the university's NCAA Division 1 men's soccer team and double majored in finance and economics.[4][11][12]
Career
EllieGrid
Matamoros is the inventor of EllieGrid. EllieGrid is a smart pill box that helps people stay on track with their medications.[3][13] [14][15] In order to commercialize EllieGrid, Matamoros founded EllieGrid Inc. alongside his friends Regina Vatterott and Hieu Nguyen.[6][5] Matamoros came up with the idea behind EllieGrid after seeing his grandfather struggle with medication management.[2][5]
Soccer
Growing up, Matamoros played soccer with the Houston Dynamo Academy. While at the Dynamo Academy, Matamoros served as the team captain and was selected as the "Player of the Year" in 2011. During his senior year, he trained with the Houston Dynamo first team and played games with them in MLS Reserve League games. He made his debut against Sporting Kansas City.[1] After graduating high school, Matamoros decided to postpone his professional soccer career. As a result, the Houston Dynamo placed Matamoros on the "Protected Player List".[16] Matamoros played soccer at the University of Tulsa where he started all four years and was selected as the Offensive MVP of The American Athletic Conference Tournament.[17][4]
