Abel De Luna (born July 27, 1946, in Colonia Modelo, Zacatecas, Mexico) is a Mexican entrepreneur and music producer,[1] with a distinguished career in the U.S. regional Mexican music industry.[2] Alongside his business ventures, he also served as mayor and council member in the city of Healdsburg, California.[3][4]
Political Career
In 1976, De Luna was elected to the Healdsburg City Council, and in 1978, the city council appointed him mayor,[5][3] a role he held until 1980. During his tenure, he worked on infrastructure and regional transportation projects.[6] In recognition of his legacy, the Healdsburg Community Center will be renamed in his honor.[7] In addition, a park is being proposed to be named after him in honor of his community contributions.[8]
Professional Background
Abel De Luna is the co-founder and treasurer of Promotores Unidos USA,[9] an organization that promotes regional Mexican music.
He founded the record label Luna Music,[10] an independent label where he still serves as CEO. He also founded Moon Broadcasting, a radio network broadcasting regional Mexican music, which currently includes the formats La Máquina Musical and La Musikera.
Throughout his career, he has worked with artists such as Juan Gabriel, Vicente Fernández, Los Caminantes, Los Huracanes del Norte,[11] Sonora Tropicana,[12] Los Carlos y El Tiempo, Arkangel R15,[13] among others.
In the music industry, De Luna served as Senior VP of the Regional Mexican Music Division at SONY MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT.[13]
In business, he founded Luna Market,[14] a chain of supermarkets in Napa Valley, California, and Producciones Luna S.A., through which he ventured into film production.[15]
Community Activism
De Luna worked with Chicano movement leaders such as César Chávez and Dolores Huerta in defending farmworkers' rights. He participated in the creation of institutions like California Human Development Corp and OLE Health, organizations that continue to provide medical and economic development services to immigrant communities.
Awards and Recognition
De Luna has received awards such as the Calendario Azteca and the Heraldo de México, and several of his artists have received nominations for the Latin Grammy and Premios Lo Nuestro.
