Abetifi Presbyterian Senior High School, commonly known as Abetifi Presby or APSEC, is a co-educational second-cycle institution in Abetifi, in the Kwahu East District of the Eastern Region of Ghana. The school was established on 6 February 1956 by the Presbyterian Church of Ghana in partnership with the chiefs and people of Abetifi.[1][2] It operates as a public mission school under the Ghana Education Service.

Abetifi Presby is historically recognised as the first senior high school to be established on the Kwahu Ridge.[3] The school is located in Abetifi, a town on the Kwahu Plateau noted for its relatively high altitude and cool climate. The campus occupies an extensive area on the plateau, and the school community emphasises discipline and academic work within a Christian mission setting.[2]

History

Plans to establish a Presbyterian secondary school in the Kwahu area began in the early 1950s as part of mission and community efforts to expand access to secondary education. With support from local leaders and the Presbyterian Church, the school opened on 6 February 1956.[1] In subsequent years the school became part of the national secondary education system while retaining its mission affiliation.

Over the decades, the school has admitted students from across the Kwahu area and beyond. Past pupils have gone on to careers in education, public service, business, and other fields.[3]

Academics

The school offers the following programs under the Ghana Education Service curriculum:

  • Business[3]
  • General Arts[3]
  • General Science[3]
  • Home Economics[3]
  • Visual Arts[3]

The school prepares students for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and places emphasis on both academic and moral education.[2]

Student life

Abetifi Presby operates both boarding and day systems. Facilities on campus include science laboratories, a computer laboratory, a library, dormitories, a chapel, and sports fields.[2] Student activities include inter-house competitions, cadet corps, Red Cross, drama, debate, choir, and scripture union.

Achievements

  • The school has maintained regular participation in regional academic and sporting competitions.[3]
  • Recognised locally for its long history on the Kwahu Ridge and its role in expanding secondary education in the area.[1]
  • In October 2025, Abetifi Presby made national headlines after defeating Wesley Girls’ High School with 54 points to 49 in the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) one-eighth stage to secure a quarter-final spot.[4][5]

Notable alumni

  • Salifu Abdul Hafiz — Ghanaian filmmaker and multimedia professional.[6]

Alumni association

Former students are organised under the Abetifi Presby Old Students Association (APOSA), which supports development projects and alumni activities on campus.[2]
