Abhinandan Varthaman

The Abhinandan moustache or Abhinandan style is a style of facial hair made popular by Indian Air Force wing-commander Abhinandan Varthaman.[1] After being shot down in a dogfight during the 2019 India-Pakistan standoff, Varthaman was held captive for three days in Pakistan, then returned to India. Media around the world showed a photograph of him with the moustache. This sparked a trend and thousands of men in India began wearing the style. It is considered to be a symbol of bravery and tenacity.[2][3][4][5]

Description[edit]

The style is similar to a combination old gunslinger moustache and mutton chops worn by Franz Joseph I of Austria.[6][4] It resembles actor Suriya's moustache in the film Singam and the moustache of actor Rajnikanth's character in the movie Petta.[6][7]

GQ, an American based fashion magazine, reported on the "Abhinandan gunslinger moustache". They interviewed a Master barber at Truefitt & Hill who said that "the gunslinger moustache can very easily go wrong if you don’t know what you’re doing" so it is crucial so as to not over-do it.[8] Indian actor Ranveer Singh's barber, Darshan Yewalekar, was quoted saying that "the beard sported by the IAF pilot will soon be called India's very own Abhinandan style."[9]

In advertising[edit]

A number of companies used the moustache in their advertisements. Dairy company Amul produced a video with Jim Sarbh, featuring a little girl wearing an Abhinandan-shaped milk moustache.[10][11] The ad, posted on Twitter, received more than 170,000 views within 24 hours.[12][13] Pizza Hut also posted a tweet with the Abhinandan moustache on 3 March 2019.[14][15]
