Abid Hussain (born May 4, 1981) is a Pakistani economist who researches a variety of thematic areas including agriculture, food security, poverty, food systems, renewable energy and climate change adaptation with geographical focus on the Hindu Kush Himalaya region.[1] He is working as Economies Lead at the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), a regional intergovernmental learning and knowledge sharing centre based in Kathmandu, Nepal.[2]
Education
Hussain completed his intermediate from the Forman Christian College, Lahore Pakistan in 1999. He graduated from the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, Pakistan with a bachelor in Agricultural Economics in 2003. He attended Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand for his Master of Science in Development Economics, graduating in 2009. He also received a PhD in Development Economics under the Regional and Rural Development Planning field of study from Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand, graduating in 2012.[3] [4]
Career
Hussain's professional career spans academia, banking, and international development. He began his career in the financial sector, holding a management position at MCB Bank Limited in Pakistan. He subsequently transitioned to academia, serving as an Assistant Professor in the economics departments of two public-sector universities in Pakistan: Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University in Rawalpindi and the University of Haripur in Haripur. In 2013, Hussain joined the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), where he has been employed for over a decade. During his tenure, he has held several key positions, progressing from Food Security Economist to Group Lead for Socioeconomics, Senior Economist and Food Systems Specialist, and later to the role of Economies Lead.[5] [6]

Hussain has authored and co-authored a significant body of work, including peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and technical reports in the fields of agriculture, food security, poverty, food systems, renewable energy and climate change adaptation with focus on mountain areas, particularly the Hindu Kush Himalaya region. His publications have been cited in academic literature, indicating his influence in the field. He is the Lead Author of prestigious global scientific assessments. He is Lead Author of ‘Chapter 8: Asia’ of the Working Group – II contribution to the 7th Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).[22] [23] He also served (2021-24) as a Lead Author on the Nexus Assessment (Biodiversity-Water-Food-Health) of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES).[24] In 2017-19, he served as Lead of ‘Chapter 9: Food and Nutrition Security in the Hindu Kush Himalaya’ of the Hindu Kush Himalaya Assessment.[25] Hussain is also one of 78 global experts convened by UNFCCC to assist the work on the refinement and development of indicators (the UAE-Belém work programme) under Global Goals on Adaptation launched under the Paris Agreement (Article 7).[26] Hussain is also a member of the editorial board of Nature portfolio journal ‘Humanities and Social Sciences Communications'.[27]
