The Abidar fire was one of the most extensive natural wildfires in Sanandaj, Kurdistan province, Iran which occurred on 24 July 2025 on the slopes of Mount Abidar.[1] The incident led to the deaths of three environmental activists.[2]
Incident description
The fire started at around midday in the area behind the Children’s Park, and due to strong winds, it quickly spread to vast parts of Mount Abidar. Firefighters, natural resources forces, and a large number of volunteers from the public participated in extinguishing the flames.[3]
Casualties
As a result of this wildfire, more than 20 hectares of vegetation on Mount Abidar were destroyed. Hamid Moradi, an attorney and head of the Shaneye Nozhin Kurdistan association, lost his life after sustaining 95% burns while battling the fire. Two other environmental activists, namely Chiako Yousefinejad, and Khabat Amini, lost their lives due to severe burns.[4]
