Abneet Bharti (born 14 July 1998) is an Indian professional footballer who plays as a defender for Sport União Sintrense. Italian football newspaper CalcioMercato.com nominated him as one of the best Under-21 Asian players in the world [1]

Club career[edit]

Early career[edit]

Bharti spent his first years in the local sports club Shastri FC in New Delhi, India. Later due to the transfer of his father's job to Singapore, Bharti was spotted by S.League club Geylang International FC who signed him on a youth contract. At the age of 13 he was promoted to the under 16 squad and also made appearances for the under 18 squad towards the end of the season. After a good season, his youth contract was extended.[2]

After his stint with Geylang International FC, he signed a contract with fellow S.League rival Balestier Khalsa, at the age of 14 he was fast-tracked from the youth sides to the reserve team. During the season he was also involved with the first team by coach Marko Kraljević at the age of 14. Later in 2014, a few clubs were said to be keeping an eye on him from Europe. He eventually chose Spain for his development and moved to Real Valladolid.[3][4]

Real Valladolid[edit]

Before the 2014-2015 season, Bharti moved and joined Spanish side, Real Valladolid.[3] Bharti was scouted by scout Daswani, who played a major role in the transfer.[3] He adjusted to life in Spain very quickly and was regularly promoted up in the club's youth sides.[5]

He continued to put good performances and a host of European clubs including R.S.C. Anderlecht, Eintracht Frankfurt, TSV 1860 Munich, SV Darmstadt 98 started to monitor his progress and invited him to visit and train. However, due to FIFA transfer rules restricting the transfer of minors, he was unable to sign the contract offered by clubs and complete a transfer.[6][7][8]

After his father's job transfer to Poland, at the age of just 16 years old he had a successful trial and was offered a professional contract with the first team of Podbeskidzie Bielsko-Biała who at that time played in top tier, Polish Ekstraklasa. However, due to internal conflicts inside the club, Bharti chose to return to Valladolid.[9][10][11][12]

Sport Uniäo Sintrense[edit]

Bharti completed a transfer to Sport União Sintrense during the last days of the winter transfer window in January 2017. He moved to the Sintra based club to gain more senior football experience after lack of first team opportunities in Real Valladolid. Bharti was convinced to go there by head coach Luís Boa Morte, who regarded the youngster highly.[13][14]

Bharti made his debut against Sporting Lisbon and played as a right back, he was also the youngest player on the pitch.[15]

International[edit]

Born to Indian parents in Kathmandu, Nepal, Bharti is eligible to play for both India and Nepal national teams. Bharti is still awaiting a call-up for the senior side.[14]
