Abraham Shaji John is a veteran trade union leader who has commenced his activities as Assistant General Secretary of Indian Overseas Bank Officers Association (IOBOA) by winning election in 1993, later elected as Vice President South of IOBOA in 2011 and further elevated as Senior Vice President of IOBOA, now invariably declared as the President of IOBOA. He has also been appointed as the State Secretary of All India Bank Officers Confederation (AIBOC) for the second consecutive term.

Biography[edit]

Abraham Shaji was born to Yohannan and Mariamma in Pazhaveedu, a locality of Alappuzha in the south Indian state of Kerala in 1960. His early schooling was at the Pazhaveedu UP school and T.D. High School after which he graduated from SD College, Alappuzha and followed it with a master's degree in Agriculture from Agriculture College, Vellayani in 1984. During his young age he showed interest in sports activities like Cricket, Hockey and Table Tennis.

His banking career kick started in 1984 at Indian Overseas Bank, Ranni Branch, as Agriculture Officer. He served in more than 10 IOB branches across Kerala. He made and continuously expanded to a big circle of friends throughout his career. In 1993 , he was promoted as Deputy Manager and posted at Kuravankonam Branch and succeeded to Aristo Junction branch as Manager in 1994. There he was well appreciated for his good work and became a star among colleagues. He was further promoted as Credit Officer, Planning Officer and Senior Manager of Retail Division at IOB Trivandrum Regional Office.

He entered the Trade Union movement of Bank Officers in the year of 1993 through an election. He became the Assistant Secretary of IOBOA Trivandrum Region. During the same year he shifted his residence to Trivandrum. He was even more appreciated and shown his best performance when he was posted as Lead District Manager of Trivandrum during the years 2003 and 2017. He decorated many positions in his trade union activities. State Secretary, Deputy General Secretary, Vice President (West Region , including 6 states), Vice President (South), Senior Vice President at 2017.

Since 2019, Shaji holds office as National President, for the Indian Overseas Bank Officers Association. From 1996 onwards he was also the Trivandrum District President for All India Bank Officers Confederation. In 1998 he was elected as State Assistant Secretary of the same. During his long tenure he lead many strikes, for the welfare of all bank employees and was a contact point for the government on many disputed banking welfare matters. He was successful in most of them and stood for employees welfare. He is unanimously accepted as a true leader.
