Abylai Khan Square (Kazakh: Абылай-хан алаңы) is the main public square in Kokshetau, Kazakhstan, located in the city's historic center. It is located on Abai Qunanbaiuly Street, the city's main thoroughfare. It is known to frequently serve as a space for public gatherings, ceremonies, and concerts.

The square is located in front of the Akmola Regional Mäslihat and around it are the Hotel Kokshetau, Central Park, and features the iconic Abylai Khan Monument. It gained its current name in October 1998. The square used to be named after Vladimir Lenin and a statue of him stood in the center of the square until 1998.

Nowadays, the Abylai Khan Square is one of three squares in Kokshetau, the others being the Independence Square and the Station Square, located in the city's center and northern end, respectively.

History

Early history

This square was originally formed at the end of the 19th century.

Soviet Period

In 1963, in front of the House of Soviets, a monument of Vladimir Lenin was constructed, and it stood there until 1999.

In 1970, the square was renamed Lenin Square, after Vladimir Lenin.

In 1987, Kokshetau Hotel was constructed.

During the Soviet period, the square was used for demonstrations and parades in honor of Victory Day and the October Revolution.

Independent Kazakhstan

After Kazakhstan's independence in 1991, the square was given its current name.

In 1999, a monument to Abylai Khan was erected.
