The academic dress of the University of Newcastle (Australia) prescribes the hats, gowns and hoods worn at formal public occasions by officers, academics, graduates and students to denote their status within the university community. The University Council is authorised by the University of Newcastle Act 1989 (NSW) s 28 to regulate the "form and use of academic costume" at the institution. The current rules governing academic dress were approved by the Council in 2007.[1]
The University generally follows the patterns of Cambridge University in the UK.[1] This article uses the Groves classification system in square brackets to describe the shape of hats, gowns, and hoods.
