Achieng Akena

Achieng Maureen Akena is a Kenyan lawyer, human rights, refugee and democratic governance advocate.[1][2][3][4][5] Achieng has 25 years of working experience in human rights and democratisation, of which 16 years have been spent working on continental-wide programmes including international justice, human rights and democratisation, policy advocacy, gender justice, peace and security, migration, displacement, and civil society capacitation and mobilisation.[6]

Achieng is currently the Executive Director of International Refugee Rights Initiative (IRRI).[1][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14] Before joining International Refugee Rights Initiative, Achieng served as the Executive Director of the Centre for Citizens Participation in the African Union (CCPAU)/The Pan African Citizens Network (PACIN),[15][16][17][14] Human Rights Officer for the United Nations Assistance Mission to Afghanistan (UNAMA), in 2008,[7][8][18] and a Human Rights Observer with the African-led Support Mission to Mali (AFISMA) in 2013.[1] She also worked as a Programme Officer for Research Engagement and Learning at UHAI - The East African Sexual Health and Rights Initiative; a Policy Analyst for OSIEA's African Union Advocacy Programme; a Project Coordinator for IRRI's International Justice in Africa Programme;[1] and an Activism and Information Programmes Officer for DITSHWANELO - The Botswana Centre for Human Rights.

She is a board member of The Amazon Leadership Initiative (TheALI),[19] The Pan-African Institute of Municipal Development (PIMD),[20] and the Chairperson of the Advisory Board of the National Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (NGLHRC).[21]She also provides mentorship to students at the African Leadership Centre. She has spoken out on issues she is passionate about through media and published articles, for example a recent podcast[22] and book chapter[23] on Pan-Africanism and African Migration, on legal advocacy and social mobilisation by sexual and gender minorities in Africa,[24]

Achieng has also been a guest editor on an Oxford Journal on the global refugee regime in Africa in the Oxford Refugee Survey Quarterly.[25]

Achieng currently holds a Masters in International Human Rights Law from Oxford University in the UK.[1][7][26]
