Achim Wambach (born 1968) is a German economist and President of the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim[1][2][3]. He has been a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy since 2006. In March 2016, he was elected chair of the Monopolies Commission.[4] [5][6] In 2016, he was ranked 10th in the list of the 100 most influential economists in Germany.[7] [8] [9][10]

Life and education

Between 1988 and 1991, Achim Wambach studied Physics and Mathematics at the University of Cologne. After completing his studies, Achim Wambach received a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) to study at the University of Oxford, where he obtained his PhD in Physics in 1994. After finishing his Master of Science degree in Economics at the London School of Economics, he completed his habilitation thesis in Economics at the University of Munich. Between 2001 and 2005, he was Professor of Economics at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg. Achim Wambach taught at the University of Cologne from 2005 to 2016, where he held the professorship for economics. In April 2016, he was appointed President of the Mannheim Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW).[11] [12][13] His fields of interest include competition policy issues as well as information problems in markets.[14][15] His research draws on methods of market design and industrial economics.[16][17]

• Chairman of the Management Board of the German Economic Association (Verein für Socialpolitik) (since 2017)[22]

Selected awards

In 1995, Achim Wambach received the Ely Devons Prize[23] in recognition of his achievements at the London School of Economics. In 2001, he was awarded the Ernst Meyer Prize by the Geneva Association for his habilitation thesis. He also received the Prize in Health Economics awarded by the German Economic Association (Verein für Socialpolitik). In 2016, he was elected member of the German National Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech)[24].
