Acid Nerve is a UK independent game developer based in Manchester. Founded by Mark Foster and Dave Fenn in 2014, they are a two man team who work with artists around the world[1]. Acid Nerve is best know for developing Titan Souls and Death's Door.

Their most well know games Titan Souls and Death's Door are published by Devolver Digital. Acid Nerve has made many games under Game Jams.

History[edit]

Mark Foster and David Fenn met at a developer meetup in Manchester participating in a Game Jam themed around Christmas. Together they would make a game called 'Pantsless Santa' becoming Acid Nerve's unofficial first game, the game was made in under 24 hours apart of a the Game Jam competition.[2] In 2013, as apart of Ludum Dare 26, Mark and Dave created 'Leaf Me Alone', a platformer about a seedling setting out to explore the world, this would later be redeveloped into Telepaint in 2016.[3][4]

During 2014 when Mark and Dave participated together in Ludum Dare 28 a Game Jam competition, in which they developed an early version of Titan Souls gaining enough popularity be noticed by Devolver Digital. The Acid Nerve team regarded this as their start to their professional career. Titan Souls would then go on to have a full release in 2015, further expanding on the game made during Ludum Dare. Mark stated that during development of Titan Souls(after Ludum Dare) that the group was inexperienced in professionally developing a game and Devolver Digital had guided them through the process of pitching the game and requesting funds.[4]

After Titan Souls, Acid Nerve went on to make games on a smaller scale, participating in Game Jams and working on 'Telepaint'. Mark and Dave made 'Telepaint' to take a break from the larger debut of 'Titan Souls', it was made from inspiration their previous game 'Leaf Me Alone', and would be sold exclusively on iOS.[5][4] The known Game Jams they participated in all collaborating with an artist named Angus Dick, these games are Fruit Wolf, Head Home and Face Man. All games done by Acid Nerve are uploaded onto Mark's itch.io which has been repurposed as Acid Nerve's itchi.io page.[6]

In 2017 Acid Nerve would begin on Death's Door, this would be Acid Nerve's first for many things, the pair wanted to move away the style of indie games of having a single simple game mechanic and creating an entire game around that mechanic. Instead they wanted to create a game with multiple game mechanics that wouldn't limit their game design to accommodate for the simple mechanic. [7] This would also be Acid Nerve's first game made in 3D as all games created beforehand were Pixel art or made with 2D assets, animation would be something that Mark would end up doing himself despite having being a beginner. Death's Door would be Acid Nerve's biggest collaboration, with eight people having been credited by the end of production. Death's Door would be critically acclaimed winning and being nominated for many awards in 2021, much to the team's surprise.[4]

Culture[edit]

Mark and David believe that instead of hiring and growing a small team, they prefer to hire artists around the world to help with their work, this would vary the art style of their games and is something that just enjoy. A majority of Acid Nerve's games feature or include collaborations with other artists or hired work based on portfolios seen on Artstation.[8] While Mark mainly focuses on programming and a bit of art, David works on music and sound design, they both work on game and level designs. Particularly for Death's Door, Mark and David looked for an artist who could fit their vision of the game and found concept artists that could bring their vision to life. [4]
