Action Button is an interactive technology developed by Speakable, PBC that makes it faster and easier for people to support social causes in moments when they are inspired. Action Button does this by connecting readers to civic and charitable actions they can take directly from online news articles. Action Button was founded by Jordan Hewson in October 2016.[1]

History[edit]

The idea for Action Button came in 2012 when Jordan Hewson read an article about Malala Yousafsai being shot by the Taliban for advocating Pakistani girls right to attend school. Jordan was moved by both the article and lack of ways for her to take action to help Malala. Jordan started building out the concept for an “Action Button” that would allow readers to easily get involved in the news stories they care about, by taking actions such as signing petitions, lobbying members of Congress, and donating to reputable charities, directly from a news article.[2][3] The company’s earliest advisors included Arianna Huffington, Joe Cerrell and Oscar Salazar.[4]

Action Button[edit]

Action Button was built as an embed that can be inserted into any publisher’s page. It uses machine algorithms to match digital content with the most credible ways to take action, in the form of polls, quizzes, donations, volunteering and petitions.[5][6][7] In September 2017 Action Button introduced a new tool called Contact Your Representative, which geo-locates a user’s correct Congressional representatives, and allows the user to call, tweet or email their Congressmen or Senators to share their political and legislative views.[1]

By 2018, the Action Button suite had been built out to feature a set of fundraising and engagement tools that can be employed by both NGOs and socially-conscious consumer brands. Action Button’s NGO partners include ONE, Amnesty International, CARE, the International Rescue Committee, Planned Parenthood and the ACLU among others. Their publisher partners include Time, Vice, Refinery29 and The Guardian U.S among others.[8][6][7][9]
