Adam Dickson (academic)
Adam Geoffrey Donald Dickson (born 13 January) 1998) is a British researcher and academic expert.
His research focuses on antisemitism in English football, with particular emphasis on supporter experiences, and the governance of inclusion within sporting environments. His work examines how football institutions, and wider public discourse, shape the participation and wellbeing of Jewish supporters.
His professional interests lie in the development of trauma informed approaches to policy, curriculum design, and institutional practice. This work contributes to research and public discussion on discrimination, identity, and safety in sport, particularly in relation to contemporary political and social tensions.
Biography
Dickson was born on 13 January 1998 in King's Lynn, Norfolk to Geoffrey and Alison Dickson (née Carman). At the time of his birth, Dickson's father was stationed at RAF Henlow.
Following a move to Paris in 1999, the family returned to the UK in 2003, moving to Ripon in North Yorkshire, whilst his father took up a position at RAF Leeming. He attended King James's School, Knaresborough and went on to study History and Education at St Mary's College, Durham University before embarking on a career as a secondary school history teacher, working in Middlesborough, Darlington and Catterick Garrison. He completed an MA in Trauma Informed Education Practice and specialised in vicarious trauma and school outcomes of service children in the UK.
Dickson returned to Durham to complete his PhD in the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences, focusing on trauma informed approaches to combatting antisemitism in English sport. He is now a leading expert in his field. He was supervised by Dr Emma Poulton and Professor Martin Roderick. He is a Member of the Chartered College of Teaching, and a Fellow of the London Centre for the Study of Contemporary Antisemitism
Research
Adam’s research considers trauma informed approaches to combatting antisemitism within English football, with a particular focus on how lived experience and generational memory shape responses to hate speech. By understanding these dynamics - both within stadia and in online environments - his work aims to inform practical, community focused interventions that support resilience and improve the design and delivery of countermeasures to resurging antisemitism.
Across his research portfolio, Adam maintains a clear commitment to practical impact: using scholarship to inform policy, support vulnerable groups, and embed equity and psychological safety within education, sport, and public health systems. Adam has previously curated research into the role of trauma within educational and social systems: including how the national history curriculum relates to the lived experiences of ethnic minority students; as well as an examination of the developmental and behavioural impacts of military connected children with British schools.
Personal Life
Dickson has a twin sister, Ellie, who moved to the United States in 2016 to play women's football. Dickson's father, who served in the Royal Air Force for forty years, held a number of prominent roles: including as Air Attaché at NATO headquarters and lately, Officer Commanding at RAF Menwith Hill - an intelligence base offering satellite and communication intercept and missile warning sites in the Yorkshire Dales.
Dickson refers to himself as a proud Yorkshireman and says he was reared in the Dales, a nod to the fact his mother hails from York. His father is from Sunderland, so naturally, Dickson is a supporter of Sunderland A.F.C.
Whilst at St Mary's College, Durham, Dickson was Director of Cricket. Whilst also at University, Dickson became a Special Constable, serving for a number of years.
