Adam Franz Freiherr Burich von Pournay (1732–1803) was a Croatian nobleman, military man [1] and peace envoy[2]in the Habsburg Monarchy. During his military career, which lasted 36 years (1750–1786), he acquired the rank of lieutenant colonel.
Biography[edit]
As an eighteen-year-old, Burić became a soldier in the 2nd Ban Krajina Infantry Regiment. As part of it, he took part in a series of battles of the Seven Years' War, including the battles of Lobositz (1756), Prague (1757), Schweidnitz (1757), Torgau (1760) and others. He progressed slowly in the military hierarchy, so it was not until 1772 that he received the rank of lieutenant.
When the War of the Bavarian Succession began in 1778, he was promoted to the rank of captain. With his company, which was part of the 1st Ban Krajina Infantry Regiment, he joined the Habsburg military units in what is now the Czech Republic. In the sieges and battles there with the forces of the Prussian King Friedrich II, Burić proved to be a brave soldier. He took part in clashes at Grossaupe (1778), Biebersdorf (1778), Königgrätz (1778), Dittersbach (1778), Zuckmantel (1779) and elsewhere. For the skillful and courageous defense of his positions from several days of attacks by the Prussian army near the Grossaupe gorge in August and early September 1778, Burić was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Military Order of Maria Theresa, the highest Habsburg order of military merit. He also received the title of baron from King Joseph II.
At the same time, he was promoted to the rank of major and later took command of the newly formed volunteer corps. At the beginning of 1779, the corps defended the positions near the settlement of Zuckmantel from the Prussian attack. Shortly after the end of the Bavarian War of Succession and the conclusion of peace in Tešina on 13 May 1779, the corps was returned home and later disbanded.
In 1780, Burić was transferred to the Slunj Krajina Infantry Regiment, which occasionally had conflicts with the Ottomans. In order to calm down the situation, Burić was elected peace envoy in 1782 and sent to Rakovica for negotiations with the Ottoman commander Čijuš-aga. Negotiations were completed and peace at the border reigned for some time, and Burić soon (1786), becoming a [lieutenant colonel]] in the meantime, retired.
Adam Franjo Burić was married to Renata von Schönthal and had a son, Ivan Vilim, born in 1794 in Agram, a later Habsburg sub-marshal. He died and was buried in 1803 in Varaždin.
