Adam Brian Thomas Hann (born 20 June 1988) is an English musician who came to prominence as a founding member and lead guitarist of the pop rock band the 1975.[1][2][3][4]

Early life[edit]

Hann spent his formative years in Handforth, Cheshire, and attended Wilmslow High School.[5] He first played guitar in his teens, recalling: "My cousin played—he came to visit and brought his guitar and a little practice amp. The next day I went to the local music shop and bought a 10-watt Marshall amp and an Epiphone SG."[2]

Career[edit]

In 2002, at Wilmslow High School, Hann who plays guitar, recruited and befriended Ross MacDonald, Matty Healy and George Daniel to form a band.[6][7] He initially wanted to form a band because a local council worker had begun organising gigs for teens and wanted to play at one.[8]

While attending universities in Manchester and working as delivery drivers at a Chinese restaurant,[9] the band played gigs around Greater Manchester[10] under multiple names including Me and You Versus Them, Those 1975s, Forever Drawing Six,[11] Talkhouse,[12] the Slowdown,[13] and Bigsleep.[14] They have been called Drive Like I Do[15] before settling on the band name the 1975 in 2012.[16][17] It came from a page of scribblings found on Healy's copy of On the Road by Jack Kerouac that was dated "1 June, The 1975".[18][19][20]

The 1975 were rejected by every major record label, with executives confused by the band's musical eclecticism.[21] After years as the band's manager, Jamie Oborne set up his own independent label, Dirty Hit, and signed the band for 20 pounds.[22][23]

The band released four extended plays in quick succession; Facedown and Sex in 2012, and Music for Cars and IV in 2013.[24] They followed it with their eponymous debut album (2013), I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful yet So Unaware of It (2016), A Brief Inquiry into Online Relationships (2018), Notes on a Conditional Form (2020) and Being Funny in a Foreign Language (2022). Each of their studio albums reached number one on the UK Albums Chart and garnered critical acclaim.[25]

Hann's work with the band made him the recipient of four Brit Awards,[26][27][28] and two Ivor Novello Awards.[29] He has also been nominated twice for the Mercury Prize,[30][31] and once for the Grammy Awards.[32]

Personal life[edit]

Hann is married to Carly Holt, who provided the additional vocals in the band's single "About You" off of their fifth album Being Funny in a Foreign Language.[33] They have one child, a son.[34][35]
