Adam Melchor (born May 18, 1996) is an American singer-songwriter known for his blend of indie pop and folk music.
Early life and Education
Adam Melchor, was born inJersey City, New Jersey.[1] He was raised in a musically inclined family, with several relatives working as music teachers[2] including his grandfather who was a member of the New York Philharmonic.[3] His parents, both educators with a deep appreciation for music, encouraged his early exploration of various instruments. As a child, he learned to play the guitar at the age of 13, developing a keen sense of melody and harmony.[4] Though Melchor states that he did not always have a voice to become a singer, but the support from his family and the drive to be one.[5]
During his school years, Melchor participated in choir and musical theater, further honing his vocal skills. His interest in classical music led him to study opera in high school, where he trained under professional vocal instructors. His talent earned him opportunities to perform in school productions and local music events, including becoming a section leader of the choir at the church he attended in the Garden State's Bergen County.[2]
Melchor pursued his passion for opera at Montclair State University, where he earned a degree in Classical Voice Performance.[2] While at Montclair State, he gained experience performing at local coffee shops and bars to support himself financially[6] Despite his classical training, Melchor found himself increasingly drawn to songwriting and contemporary music. Influenced by artists such as Paul Simon and Joni Mitchell, he began writing and performing original compositions.
After graduating, Melchor transitioned fully into contemporary music, blending his classical expertise with folk and indie influences. He started recording and self-producing songs, gradually shifting away from opera to pursue his passion for storytelling through music, though Melchor described his music at the beginning as unlistenable even to himself.[7] This shift marked the beginning of his journey as an indie artist, leading to his eventual breakthrough in the music industry.[8]
Career
Beginnings and Early Releases
After completing his studies, Melchor began writing and recording his own songs, initially producing demos in his bedroom and car.[8] He performed at various venues across New Jersey and New York, gradually building a following.
In 2017, he released his debut EP, The Archer, which received positive reviews for its heartfelt lyrics and intricate acoustic arrangements.[9] His music gained traction through online platforms, leading to increased recognition.
Move to Los Angeles and Breakthrough Success
In 2018, Melchor moved to Los Angeles to further his music career and potentially fulfilling his lifelong dream of becoming a musician in Los Angeles.[10] There, he collaborated with artists such as Charlie Puth and The Chainsmokers. He also toured with acts such as Mt. Joy, Dodie, and Rodrigo y Gabriela to further expand his audience.[11]
He released two singles in 2018, "Metadata" and "Real Estate," the latter being released in December 2018, became a fan favorite and significantly boosted his visibility in the indie music scene.
In 2020, Melchor produced the song "Oldest Teenager", for Lexi Jayde.
Album Releases and Continued Growth
In 2021, Melchor signed with Warner Records.[12] Melchor's discography includes several albums and EPs. In 2021, he released "Melchor Lullaby Hotline Vol. 1," a collection of songs from his weekly home-recording series.[13] The project showcased his ability to craft intimate, soothing melodies. He also helped write songs for Ashe and Laufey.
In 2022, he released his full-length album, "Here Goes Nothing!", which displayed a more diverse sound, blending elements of indie, folk, and alternative pop.[13] The album was well received, with critics praising his songwriting and vocal delivery.[14]
In 2023, he released the EP "Fruitland," further refining his indie pop style. The EP featured themes of nostalgia and self-reflection, cementing his reputation as a reputation as a thoughtful lyricist.
