He was the lead trial counsel in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard, an affirmative action case that is expected to reach the Supreme Court of the United States.[1][2][3]

Education and career[edit]

Mortara graduated from the College of the University of Chicago with a B.Sc. with general honors, majoring in chemistry.[4] He later entered and dropped out of a doctoral program at Magdalene College, Cambridge, though he earned a Master's of Arts in Natural Sciences during his time at Cambridge. In 2001, he earned a J.D. with the highest honors from the University of Chicago Law School.[5]

After graduating from law school, Mortara clerked for Judge Patrick Higginbotham on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and Justice Clarence Thomas on the U.S. Supreme Court.[5][6] He was then a Temple Bar Scholar at the American Inns of Court. In 2003, he joined Bartlit Beck Herman Palenchar & Scott and was promoted to partner in 2007.[5] He has lectured at the University of Chicago Law School since 2007.[7][4]

Mortara was the lead trial counsel for Students for Fair Admissions in the affirmative action case Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard, which was filed in 2014 and is currently before the federal courts.[1][2] Mortara states that he was brought to tears when he saw a PowerPoint presentation depicting Asian-American discrimination at Harvard, and that he was motivated to take the case because three of his close friends are Asian. Mortara further asserts that he can speak Mandarin and traveled to many Chinese cities in his youth.[4]
