Published in 2019 in Lithuanian (as ‘Adata’) by the largest publishing house company group in the Baltic states Alma littera, the novel became a hit, reissued in additional editions. It received many nominations, among them

Top 12 most creative books of the year,

Top 10 most cinematic novels, and others.

The novel has been translated into French and will be released in the first trimester of 2022 by one of the largest publishers in France Actes Sud.

Plot introduction

Vilnius, Lithuania. A maniac, crazy about birds, flies on a hang-glider with an eagle over Vilnius.

A young nursing mother is found atop the Hill of Three Cross, brutally murdered. A dead dove has been placed on her forehead. There is a tattoo of a red parrot on her left shoulder; another small parrot, this time a real one, is discovered in her genitalia. High above the scene an eagle circles. What does it all mean?

We meet Police Commissioner Algimantas Katkus, a man whose personal life has recently come to pieces and who has now been tasked to solve the most complicated riddle of his career.

Located in Northern Europe, nestled on the coast of the Baltic Sea, is Lithuania, a little-known country belonging to both the European Union and NATO. It is a secretive land of lakes and forests where the autumnal atmosphere, bathed in twilight, cold, rain and fog, is ripe for drama.

Reception

In the Needle the author invents a completely new, original and even, I would say, too great maniac for Lithuania, with a special, unseen unheard need. (...) We need that - an original and invisible criminal, not a banal one (LRT)

A novel permeated with a Scandinavian spirit... Jaroslav Melnik never ceases to surprises (Lietuvos rytas)

Lithuanian Jo Nesbø (Delfi)
