Adelaide Hamilton (January 9, 1830 – May 9, 1915) was an author, member of the Colonial Dames of America, and the last surviving granddaughter of Alexander Hamilton.

Early life[edit]

Hamilton was born on January 9,1830. She was the tenth child of John Church Hamilton (1792-1882) and Maria Eliza Van Den Heuvel (1795-1873)[1]

Her paternal grandparents were Alexander Hamilton, a Founding Father of the United States, and Elizabeth Schuyler. His maternal grandparents were Baron John Cornelius van den Heuvel, the one-time governor of Dutch Guiana and Charlotte Apthorp van den Heuvel.[2]

In 1899, Adelaide testified against her younger sister, Alice Hamilton to see if she was insane. Hamilton said that her younger sister imagined that she could not walk, had religious delusions and imagined that all of her relatives were dead=>"MISS HAMILTON DECLARED INSANE; | Wealthy Granddaughter of Alexander Hamilton Pronounced So By Jury". Adelaide Hamilton died on May 9, 1915, at her residence at 17 West, Twentieth Street, She had outlived all of her siblings and cousins, thus making her the last surviving granddaughter and grandchild of Alexander Hamilton and Elizabeth Schuyler. She is buried with her father, mother, her younger sister Alice and older sister Charlotte Augusta Hamilton (1819-1896), along with her younger brother Lauren's Hamilton.
