Adendorff Machinery Mart (Pty) Ltd , commonly referred to as Adendorff (formerly known as Adendorff Auctioneers), is a privately held tools and machinery retailer headquartered in Johannesburg, South Africa. Adendorff sells both locally sourced and imported tools and machinery. Adendorff operates a chain of retail stores across South Africa with stores in major cities in all 9 South African provinces.[1][2]

History[edit]

In the early 1970's Adendorff Auctioneers was established in Turfontein, Johannesburg South as a general auctioneering company.[3] The company began auctioning liquidated assets around various cities in South Africa[4] and identified a market for the sale of tools and machinery. Adendorff proceeded to open brick and mortar stores to supplement the core auctioneering business. The first established branch was located in Johannesburg with subsequent openings in previous auctioneering hotspots of Pretoria and Klerksdorp. As the retail business grew, the company changed its name to Adendorff Machinery Mart. In the early 2000's retail became the primary focus of the business. As of 2022, Adendorff has grown to 28 locations[5] with agents in neighboring Botswana,[6] Namibia[7] & Mozambique .[8]

Corporate affairs[edit]

As with the shift to primarily focus on retail away from auctioneering in the early 2000's, Adendorff began selling an in-house exclusive brand: Mac-Afric, as an addition to their product range. Furthermore, Adendorff has a longstanding professional relationship with international brands such as:

In 2020, Adendorff moved from their original headquarters in Turfontein, Johannesburg to a new 14000 m² purpose built facility 12km away in the nearby suburb of Aeroton.[9][10] This facility would serve as the primary distribution center, head office, repairs center and as a flagship store.

Notable events and affiliations[edit]

The Mac-Afric brand gained Adendorff increasing visibility in the retail space,[11][12] particularly through the Mac-Afric generator range. As with the announcement of Load-shedding in South Africa, beginning in late 2007, standby generators had become more common in homes and business.[13] In 2014 the company was accused of being a part of a 157 kilograms shipment of heroin into Mauritius. The accusation was raised through the bust of drug trafficker, Peroomal Veeren, as the heroin was concealed in Mac-Afric pressure sandblasters .[14] Veeren had imported the sand blasters amongst a host of other construction machinery.

Adendorff Machinery Mart is a long time sponsor of Stacey-Lee May, a professional South African drifter.[15]

Awards[edit]

2021- named as "Most loved local building material supplier" by Santam in its Most Loved Local survey 2021.[16][17] Santam highlighted the general success of all businesses in the sector explained through a coinciding general increase in DIY projects done at home during the Covid-19 pandemic.
