Adetola Ariyike Salau (born 24 June 1977) is a Nigerian-American educator who is the Special Adviser on education to Kwara State Government.[1] She also was the Senior Special Adviser on Education to the Executive Governor of Lagos State from 2020 to 2023.[2][3]

Early life and education[edit]

Salau was born to Ademola Tokunboh Salau and Oreoluwa Salau in Elizabeth, New Jersey.[4] She is from Ifelodun LGA in Kwara State, Nigeria and her ancestral home was Offa local government in Kwara south.[5][6]

She earned her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Fordham University in 1998, graduating with honors She attended Syracuse University, receiving Master's degrees in Engineering Management in 2001 and Chemical Engineering in 2004.

She completed her Doctorate in Curriculum, Instruction, and the Science of Learning from the State University of New York at Buffalo.[7][8] She received the Graduate School of Education Dean’s Scholarship for Educational Diversity and Excellence in 2019 -2020. Her dissertation from November 2022 was The Nature of Practical Work in Secondary School Agricultural Science in (Lagos State) Nigeria: A Case Study.[9]

Career[edit]

Adetola is a STEM Expert and Founder of Carisma4U Educational Foundation, a platform that advocates for STEM education by organizing programs to help young people embrace STEM subjects as critical tools for improving lives and driving development.[10]

She served under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu as the Senior Special Adviser on Education and Special Assistant in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Arts. She was, until 29 May 2023 a Senior Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Education.[11] She was appointed on 11 November 2023 as Special Adviser on Education to Kwara State Governor Abdulrahaman Abdurazak.[5][11]

She is an author.[12][13]

STEM[edit]

March 2023 it was reported that The Lagos State Government Partnered GetBundi Education Technology Company to commission a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) laboratory at Wesley Girls Senior Secondary School, Yaba, Lagos. Where education technology will be shared across the Schools in Lagos under her watch as the Special Assistant to the Governor on education of the State.[14]

Adetola was part of the stakeholders that launched a software-as-a-service ecosystem platform, called Education, which was developed by a team of indigenous software engineers to promote digital teaching and learning in primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions across Nigeria and said technology in education would bring about the democracy of knowledge where education becomes a collaborative and self-driven enterprise.[15]

As an education aide, Salau started an initiative called “STEAM UP Lagos,” a program to create afterschool science clubs in more than fifty junior high and high schools with new lab spaces, STEM competitions, and teacher training. Its curriculum, which Salau developed, includes activities like fizzy baking soda explosions and investigating trash dump pollution with drones. To help expand the club to the state’s 5,000 public and 20,000 private schools, Salau hopes to elicit financial support from Nigerian businesses and international governments".[16]
