Adolphe Viollet-le-Duc (7 November 1817 – 13 March 1878) was a French landscape painter and art critic.

Life

He was born in the former 2nd arrondissement of Paris to the poet Louis Viollet-le-Duc, making him younger brother of the architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. Adolphe studied classics in great detail. Living in an environment where his taste for the arts was encouraged and quickly developed (though without abandoning his taste for writing), he learned painting in the studio of Léon Fleury.[1]

His debut was at the landscape exhibition in 1844, trying to merge severity of line with colour accents and thus combine neo-classicism and romanticism.[2]:532 He travelled widely, often staying in Italy and central France, where he made studies later worked up into Beside Lake Nemi, Remembrance of the Villa Borghese, Remembrance of Sicily, and paintings of Antibes, the iles Sainte-Marguerite, the Iles d’Hyères and Cannes. He also produced paintings of the Normandy coast and the vallée de Joux where he lived for part of every year. He died in the 9th arrondissement of Paris.
