Adrian, Inc., known as Adrian Steel Company until 2025, is an American manufacturer of cargo management equipment and upfitting solutions for commercial vans and pickup trucks, headquartered in Adrian, Michigan. Founded in 1953 by College Football Hall of Fame inductee Bob Westfall, the company produces shelving units, cargo partitions, ladder racks, truck caps, and related accessories sold through a network of more than 300 independent distributors across the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico.[1][2] The company is an authorized upfitter for Ford, GM, Ram, Nissan, and Mercedes commercial vehicles.[2]
History
Founding and early years (1953–1969)
Adrian Steel was founded in 1953 by Robert B. "Bob" Westfall, a former University of Michigan All-American and Detroit Lions All-Pro fullback.[1][3] After retiring from professional football in 1947, Westfall settled in Adrian, Michigan, where he worked for the Adrian Salvage Company before founding Adrian Steel as a small structural steel warehouse.[1]
The company transitioned into sheet metal fabrication in the late 1950s and early 1960s. With the introduction of the light-duty cargo van in the mid-1960s, Adrian Steel became one of the early manufacturers of modular van interior equipment, developing a product line of storage systems, partitions, and ladder racks that allowed fleet operators to configure cargo areas for specific trades.[1]
Subsidiary expansion (1970–1980)
In 1970, Adrian Steel formed ADSCO Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary in Lordstown, Ohio, to provide factory installation services for Chevrolet and GMC vans built at the GM Lordstown Assembly Plant. In 1977, the company added a second Ohio subsidiary, Adrian Equipment Company, to service a Chevrolet/GMC national van pool for AT&T. The van pool program expanded beyond Bell Telephone fleets in 1980. Adrian Upfitting Company was established in Pontiac, Michigan around the same period to perform factory installation for the Chevrolet S-10 and GMC S-15 pickup trucks.[1]
Bob Westfall served as chief executive officer until his death in 1980.[3] His son, Harley Westfall, who had joined Adrian Steel in 1976, succeeded him as president and led the company through a 25-year tenure of growth, distribution expansion, and manufacturing modernization. Harley Westfall was named chairman of the board in 2006 and was inducted into the Automotive Fleet Hall of Fame in 2015.[4]
2014 Kansas City facility
In April 2014, Adrian Steel opened a $4.7 million, 32,000-square-foot upfitting facility on an 11-acre site in Kansas City, Missouri, located approximately four miles from Ford's Kansas City Assembly Plant. The facility was designed to perform Ford Transit and F-150 upfits as part of Adrian Steel's participation in Ford's Qualified Vehicle Modifier program.[5]
2021 leadership changes
Effective January 1, 2021, David Pilmore became chairman of the board, and Donald DeLong, a 20-year veteran of the company's senior leadership team, succeeded Pilmore as president. John Ruppert joined as director of business development the same month.[6]
Extendobed acquisition (2023)
In June 2023, Adrian Steel acquired Extendobed, an Idaho-based manufacturer of truck bed slide-out platforms founded in 1987. The transaction was facilitated by the M&A advisory firm Benchmark International.[7]
Rebrand to Adrian (2025)
On June 2, 2025, the company announced it would rebrand from Adrian Steel Company to Adrian, Inc., citing an expanding product portfolio that had grown beyond steel to include aluminum, composites, plastics, and electronics. The company indicated the transition to the new brand identity would take place over 12–14 months.[8]
Leadership transition (2026)
At Work Truck Week 2026 in March 2026, the company announced that Marc Jackson, previously chief operating officer, had been appointed president and chief executive officer, succeeding Don DeLong. Jackson had been with the company for more than three decades in roles including vice president of operations and general manager of the Kansas City facility.[9][10]
2026 Michigan expansion
In April 2026, the Michigan Strategic Fund Board approved a $320,000 performance-based grant under the Michigan Business Development Program to support a $43.4 million expansion of Adrian's headquarters in Adrian, Michigan.[11][12] The expansion includes a 112,000-square-foot addition to the existing manufacturing facility for raw material storage, cutting, forming, welding, painting, assembly, and shipping operations. The project is projected to create at least 40 new jobs over five years.[13] In addition to the performance-based grant, the project received a five-year State Essential Services Assessment exemption valued at up to $228,751 and an anticipated property tax abatement from the City of Adrian.[13] State officials described the investment as the company's largest capital expansion in Michigan since its 1953 founding.[11][13]
The expansion was announced alongside separately reported plans to nearly double production capacity at the Adrian, Michigan facility to 245,000 square feet and to expand the Kansas City installation facility to 60,000 square feet.[9]
Products
Adrian manufactures cargo management products for commercial vans and pickup trucks, including van shelving, drawer units, cab partitions, ladder racks, truck caps, and aluminum toolboxes. The product line is designed for trade professionals in sectors including HVAC, plumbing, electrical contracting, telecommunications, parcel delivery, building maintenance, and general construction.[5][14]
In 2018, Adrian Steel collaborated with ThyssenKrupp Elevator to develop the New Installation Vehicle Optimization (NIVO) upfit, a customized Ford Transit configuration for elevator installation technicians.[15] At Work Truck Week 2026, the company introduced two new pickup truck products, the Open Bed Service Truck system and a Roll-Up Door option for pickup truck caps, marking an expansion of the company's product line beyond its historical focus on van upfits.[9][10]
Operations
Adrian is headquartered at 906 James Street in Adrian, Michigan, with a Canadian operation in Bolton, Ontario (formerly Van-Terior Outfitters, renamed Adrian Steel of Canada in 2014). Its products are sold through a network of more than 300 independent distributors across the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico.[2] The company employed approximately 350 people at its Adrian, Michigan location as of 2023, making it among the ten largest employers in the city of Adrian.[16]
Recognition
Adrian won the Work Truck magazine Upfit Package of the Year award in the truck category in both 2025 and 2026.[17][18] The 2025 award recognized the company's Pepsi F-150 Electrified Service Solution, an upfit designed for electric field service vehicles.[17]
