Advance Street Name Plaque

An Advance Street Name Plaque (W16-8P, 1 line and W16-8aP, 2 lines) is a warning sign used in the United States placed under Intersection (W1-10 series, W2 series, W10-2, W10-3, and W10-4) and Advance Traffic Control (W3 series) warning signs to indicate the name of the ahead intersecting street.[1] It can display 1 street name, or 2 with directional arrows if there are 2 sequential intersections, or if there are 2 streets at 1 intersection. They were first added in the 1971 MUTCD.[2] Both Street Name (D3-1 series) signs and Advance Street Name Plaques (W16-8P series) were required to be in all mixed case lettering by 2012.[3]
Before 2012, Street Name signs (D3-1 signs) were not required to be green colored, but it was a recommendation, which would mean that Street Name signs could be yellow.[4] Advance Street Name Plaque (W16-8P series) signs also were not required to be yellow until 2005.[5] However, if an Advance Street Name Plaque sign was a supplemental sign placed under another warning sign, it was found that the supplemental plaque should be the same color as the warning sign. Also, designated colors for Street Name Signs were made to make sure that they wouldn't be confused for other signs.[6]
