Advanced Computer Products, Inc. (ACP) was a computer retailer based in Santa Ana, California. Founded in 1976, the company was an early retailer of microcomputers and an authorized Apple dealer; it later operated the ACP Superstore, which was noted for its collection of vintage computers and its bi-monthly computer swap meets.
History
According to founder David "Dave" Freeman, Advanced Computer Products was founded in the summer of 1976.[1] The company began as a mail-order seller of hobbyist electronics kits advertised in Popular Electronics and Byte magazines, and opened a retail store in Santa Ana, California, in November 1976.[1]
ACP became an authorized dealer of Apple Computer products.[2] In the 1980s, Advanced Computer Products was one of six computer retailers that brought antitrust actions against Apple challenging the company's ban on mail-order sales of its products; the United States District Court for the Central District of California granted summary judgment for Apple, a decision affirmed by the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.[3][4]
By the 1990s, the company operated as the ACP Superstore in Santa Ana.[5] In 1991, Tom Freeman was identified as the company's president.[6]
Vintage computer collection
A 1997 Los Angeles Times feature described the vintage computer collection maintained at the ACP Superstore by brothers Tom Freeman, the company's president, and Dave Freeman, its chief executive, who had owned and operated the business since 1976. The collection included Apple II, Commodore 64, IMSAI, Altair 8800, North Star, and Osborne I machines, and was described as believed to be among the largest private collections of early personal computers. The store hosted a computer swap meet in its parking lot every two months.[5]
Later years
California corporate records list Advanced Computer Products International, Inc. as a dissolved corporation.[7]
