Introduction

The Advisory Committee for Earth Observation (ACEO) is the senior advisory body to the ESA Director of Earth Observation Programmes (D/EOP), acting as the Director General's representative, on matters concerning Earth Sciences included in the Earth Observation Programmes of ESA. It interprets the needs and views of the European scientific community regarding access to space experimentation and data exploitation in Earth science programs.

The ACEO operates under the Department of Science, Climate and Application within ESA. Its main tasks include advising and making recommendations on:

  • the needs of the scientific community for remote observations of Earth;
  • scientific activities in the development, implementation, and exploitation of approved ESA Earth Observation projects;
  • the formulation and updating of medium and long-term Earth Observation Science Strategy in Europe;
  • the priorities of the scientific community in selecting and formulating future Earth Observation missions;
  • the evolution of operational Earth Observation missions and their impact on EO Science;
  • the contribution of ESA EO missions to address major societal issues.

ACEO Composition

ACEO consists of European scientific experts, chosen from Member States and Canada, reflecting an equitable balance across main disciplines. Membership is restricted to scientists of international stature. The Chairperson and members are appointed by the Director General in consultation with the Director of Earth Observation Programmes for a period of two years, extendable to a maximum of four years. The Chair’s tenure is two years with the possibility of a one-year extension.

The Chairperson of the PB-EO and representatives from other relevant organizations are invited *ex officio* to ACEO meetings.

Operating Procedure

The Committee meets at agreed dates and locations between the Chair and the Director of Earth Observation Programmes. It provides advice and recommendations on referred items, considering views from *ad hoc* Working Groups or Peer Review Panels. The Chair reports to PB-EO meetings, and the Secretary is appointed within the ESA Earth and Mission Science Division.
