Aeroflot Flight 846 was a scheduled passenger flight from Pulkovo Airport, St Petersburg, to Sheremetyevo International Airport, Moscow. On 30 June 2008, the Tupolev Tu-154M aircraft operating the route suffered an engine failure during takeoff from Pulkovo Airport.[1] There were no fatalities as a result of this accident. Subsequently, Aeroflot made a decision to withdraw all of the remaining Tu-154s from their fleet and replace them with Airbus A320 aircraft.
Aircraft[edit]
The aircraft was built in 1990 by Aviakor, factory number 89A825 and MSN (manufacturer's serial number) 0825. It was first delivered to Aeroflot's Magadan flight division on 8 February 1990 with the registration number СССР-85667. After the collapse of the USSR the aircraft was transferred to the newly-formed MAVIAL Magadan Airlines in 1994 and was re-registered as RA-85667. In 2002 the aircraft was leased out to Kish Air (briefly re-registered as EP-LCD), then in 2004 returned to Russia and leased out to Vladivostok Air. The aircraft returned to MAVIAL in 2005 where it flew until 19 March 2007, when it was acquired by Aeroflot. At the time of the accident this Tupolev Tu-154M accumulated 21690 hours and 8414 cycles.[2]
Accident[edit]
The aircraft was operating a domestic flight in Russia from Pulkovo Airport, St Petersburg, to Sheremetyevo International Airport, Moscow. There were 103 passengers and 9 crew members onboard. The captain on this flight was S. Yepryntsev. At 15:48 local time the aircraft began its takeoff roll, when at the speed of 60 km/h (37 mph) the crew felt a bang from the rear of the aircraft, after which the left engine flamed out. The crew aborted the takeoff when they realized that the left engine had failed.[3] The fire extinguishing system activated, preventing a fire.
Investigation[edit]
Federal State Institution State Centre "Flight Safety on Air Transport" investigated the destroyed compressor disc to find the reason behind its failure. On 21 October 2008 the investigation concluded that the low pressure compressor disc developed fatigue cracks, which formed as a result of strain caused by the difference in vibration frequencies. This made the compressor disc's material become too weak.
On 23 December 2008 a final report was released by the authorities, whereby the destruction of the first stage compressor disc was caused by a structural and manufacturing defect rather than incorrect aircraft maintenance. The blame was put on the engine manufacturer "Saturn", which produced the engines for RA-85667.
Aftermath[edit]
Aircraft's aftermath[edit]
The aircraft involved in the accident was subsequently scrapped in August 2009, as repairs of the engine were not deemed economically viable.[4]
Retirement of Tu-154s[edit]
Following the outcome of this accident, Aeroflot decided to retire the remainder of its Tupolev fleet and replace them with modern Airbus aircraft. This marked a new trend for Russian airlines to replace older Soviet-built aeroplanes with Boeing 737s and Airbus A320s.
After two more accidents with Tu-154s at Domodedovo and Izhma, in March 2011 Rosaviatsiya recommended Russian airlines to temporarily suspend operations of the aircraft until a series of flaws was eliminated.[5]
As of May 2020 there is only one Tupolev Tu-154 left that is used for passenger services in Russia — RA-85757 flying for Alrosa.[6]
