Afreen Bhumgara (born September 20) is an Indian computer scientist, product manager, researcher, educator, and social activist known for her work in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, software engineering, and big data.[1] She has been a key figure in promoting women's involvement in STEM education and has been recognized for her humanitarian efforts in underprivileged communities and animal welfare in India.[2]

Early life and education[edit]

Bhumgara was born and raised in Pune, India. She is the great-granddaughter of world-cyclist Rustom R. Bhumgara. [3] She pursued her master's degree in Computer Science with a minor in Engineering Management at Northwestern University.[4]

Career[edit]

Bhumgara's work has spanned fuzzy algorithms, neural networks, cloud computing, with particular attention to the applications of these technologies in underdeveloped countries. [5] Her research has been presented at international conferences such as IEEE [6] [7] [8] and she is a Peer Reviewer at IEEE Access.

Afreen served as a Teaching Assistant at Northwestern University, for which she was awarded the Peter and Adrienne Barris Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award.[9]

Public speaking and conferences[edit]

Bhumgara has spoken on the TEDx platform, specifically TEDxMITP in 2015 about steps to help the Indian economy, and TEDxLakhotaLake in 2018 on the future of AI in India. [10] [11] [12] She has headed global technical conferences, promoting women's involvement in STEM education.[13]
