From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Africa Polling Institute (API)[1][2][3] is an independent, non-profit and non-partisan opinion research think-tank, which conducts opinion polls, surveys, social research and evaluation studies at the intersection of democracy, governance, economic conditions and public life; in order to support better public policy, practice and advocacy in Africa. API was founded in Nigeria in 2019, and is independent of governments, political parties, commercial interests, trade unions and other interest groups. [4][5]The Institute is governed by a Board of Directors and supported by an Advisory Board drawn from different areas of expertise and countries.

Scope of work[edit]

The main objective of the Institute is to produce and disseminate credible opinion research data to support better decisions, public policy, practice and advocacy in sub-Saharan Africa.[6][7] The Institute currently has research presence in the following sub-Saharan African countries: Nigeria, Cameroun, Mali, Niger, Togo, Benin, Ghana, Liberia, Sierra-Leone, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Gambia, Guinea and Central Africa Republic.[8][9]

Research work[edit]

The first nationwide survey released by the Institute was the Nigeria Social Cohesion Survey #NSCS2019.[10][11] The report, released in October 2019, amongst other findings, revealed that Nigeria is not a socially cohesive country and more needs to be done by the government to promote oneness, trust, equity, inclusion and hope for the future.[12][13]

In January 2020, the Institute in collaboration with EpiAfric, a public heath consultancy, released a report on Mental Health,[14][15] tagged the Mental Health in Nigeria Survey Report.[16][17] Key findings from the study revealed that there is a poor perception about mental health in Nigeria, as Nigerians identified drug abuse, sickness of the mind, and possession by evil spirits as the three major causes of mental illness.[18][19]

In March 2020, the Institute released a migration survey titled Deconstructing the Canada Rush – A Study on Motivations for Nigerians Emigrating to Canada.[20] The study amongst other revealed that heightened insecurity and weak economy where the leading reasons why young to middle-aged, educated and in most cases, employed Nigerians are migrating to Canada.[21][22]
