Its primary objective is to provide a comprehensive and accurate understanding of African music to Africans and the global music industry. The library indexes data and knowledge about artists[3] , bands[4], record labels, musical works, indigenous African instruments [5] and genres . [6]

History[edit]

The library was founded by Emmanuel Ogala, the CEO of Josplay Inc[7], in response to the failure of existing solutions to codify and classify African music satisfactorily. The rapid growth in the global popularity of African music in recent years made the need for more accurate documentation of African music even more critical. After three years of research and development, the first phase of AML was launched in September 2022.

Resources[edit]

AML is an innovative platform that indexes data and knowledge about artists, bands, record labels, musical works, indigenous African instruments, and genres. Its vast collection of resources serves as an agent for educating the African youth about their musical heritage and culture. The library currently carries data on over 4000 artists, 20,000 songs, and 100 genres of African origin. By the end of 2023, AML is expected to contain data on millions of songs, over 10,000 artists, and more than 100 genres and instruments of African origin.

Research[edit]

The African Music Library is also embarking on extensive research into traditional African music genres and instruments to codify this knowledge for posterity. The library works with African music scholars, musicologists, musicians, machine learning engineers, and other subject matter experts to deepen and codify our understanding of existing African music genres and instruments. Access[edit]

The African Music Library is freely accessible to the general public. In the future, users may be required to sign up for an account on the library before they can gain access to all its resources. Some of the third party research papers hosted on the Library may require a fee before full access is granted. But for the most part, the African Music Library remains freely accessible to scholars, music enthusiasts, and the global public.
