African Ornamental Breeders Association (AOBA) is an international association that focuses on the breeding and conservation of ornamental and utility animals in Africa. With more than 200,000 members spread across 30 countries, AOBA is the largest international association for small animal breeders in Africa.
History
AOBA was founded in 2019 by Congolese-Belgian philanthropist and entrepreneur Jean Kiala-Inkisi. During a visit to Kenya, he noticed the need for an association with breed standards, as many Kenyans imported poultry from Europe and bred for quantity rather than quality. Also, purebred animals were often difficult to find.
In West and Central Africa he saw that exotic breeds, imported via the African diaspora, were gaining popularity, often at the expense of indigenous breeds. Inspired by the European Entente Européenne d'Aviculture et de Cuniculture and existing South African clubs such as Poultry Club SA and SASPO, he decided to set up an African counterpart. The association focuses mainly on West, Central and East Africa, but is also open to members from other regions.
Important data
- September 2020 – Establishment of the International Studbook for Djallonké Goat & Sheep (ISDGS), at the request of breeders and regional studbook organizations from various West and Central African countries.
- March 2021 – Access to the ISDGS was extended to European breeders of purebred sheep.
- June 2022 – Start of the African Brahma Maniacs breeding program, with the import of Brahma hatching eggs from Belgium to the Democratic Republic of Congo, including eggs from European champion bloodlines.
Organisation
AOBA is headquartered in Lemfu, with regional representatives in several African countries. Jean Kiala-Inkisi serves as President and Regional Representative for Central Africa.
