The Agency for Digital Italy (Agenzia per l'Italia digitale, AgID for short) is an Italian public agency set up by the Monti Cabinet.[1][2][3][4][5] Subject to the powers of direction and supervision of the President of the Council of Ministers or of the minister delegated by him, it carries out the functions and tasks assigned to it by law in order to pursue the highest level of technological innovation in the organization and development of the public administration and at the service of citizens and businesses, in compliance with the principles of legality, impartiality and transparency and according to criteria of efficiency, cost-effectiveness and effectiveness.
A relevant task of AgID is to accredit or authorize subjects (public or private) who carry out certain activities in the digital field (for example: electronic storage, digital certificates, time stamps, PEC, PagoPA intermediary, etc.).
The structure incorporates and inherits the skills previously assigned to the Agency for the diffusion of technologies for innovation, DigitPA and the Department for Innovation and Technologies of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers.
According to the Statute[6] approved in February 2014, the purposes of the Agency for Digital Italy are:
- ensuring the IT coordination of state, regional and local administrations, with the aim of designing and monitoring the strategic evolution of the public administration information system, favoring the adoption of infrastructures and standards that reduce the costs incurred by individual administrations and improve the services provided
- accrediting the certifying subjects in the digital field (digital certificate, SPID, electronic storage, etc.)
- pursuing the optimization of IT spending by public administrations, by monitoring the related current expenditure and supporting national and local public administrations in achieving objectives of standardization and review of internal processes and optimization of overall IT spending
- carrying out the tasks necessary for the fulfillment of the international obligations assumed by the State in matters of competence;
- promoting digital innovation in the country and contributing to the creation of new knowledge and the dissemination of new opportunities for economic, cultural and social development by collaborating with European, national and regional institutions and bodies with similar purposes, also through the signing of strategic agreements
- issuing of guidelines, regulations and standards
- promotion of computer literacy initiatives for citizens
