Agentic development environment

An agentic development environment (ADE) is a software development environment designed around artificial intelligence (AI) coding agents that can perform multi-step development tasks with varying levels of human supervision. Unlike a traditional integrated development environment (IDE), which is primarily centered on a developer directly editing source code, an ADE emphasizes delegating tasks to agents that can analyze a codebase, modify files, execute commands, run tests, and evaluate the results.[1]
Characteristics
ADEs commonly provide tools for coordinating multiple coding agents and reviewing their work. Agents may work concurrently on separate tasks using isolated Git branches or worktrees, allowing changes to be inspected and merged after completion. An ADE may incorporate an agent harness, a software layer that connects an AI model to tools and context, manages state and permissions, and coordinates the agent's multi-step execution. The developer's role can therefore shift from directly implementing each change toward assigning tasks, supervising execution, reviewing diffs, and approving changes.[2]
History
The term gained prominence in June 2025 when Warp introduced Warp 2.0, which the company described as the first agentic development environment. Warp presented the concept as an alternative to adding coding agents to conventional IDEs or command-line interfaces, with agent management and parallel tasks built directly into the development environment.[3][4] By 2026, the term was being used more broadly for development environments designed to coordinate multiple AI coding agents working across software projects.[5] Cursor has also incorporated features associated with agentic development environments through its background agents, which can execute tasks concurrently in isolated environments and submit changes for review.[6]
