Agilan Thani (born August 18, 1995) is a Malaysian mixed martial artist who is currently signed to ONE Championship, where he competes in the ONE Welterweight division.

Background[edit]

Thani struggled with obesity in his early years, weighing as much as 140 kilograms, and often had to endure bullying.[1] At the age of 13, he started training in martial arts. In a span of one year, he was able to lose 55 kilograms through training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, among other martial arts. He then began training in mixed martial arts at Monarchy MMA at the age of 16.[2]

Mixed martial arts career[edit]

Amateur[edit]

Agilan Thani first competed in amateur MMA, appearing on F3 Championship and Malaysian Invasion. He compiled a flawless 6–0 record in amateur competition, finishing 5 of his 6 opponents.

On October 25, 2014, he defeated Ooi Aik Tong to win the Malaysian Invasian MMA (MIMMA) Welterweight Championship.[3]

ONE Championship[edit]

Agilan Thani made his debut on ONE Championship in his hometown of Kuala Lumpur at ONE Championship: Age of Champions on March 13, 2015, where he defeated Reant Fabriza Rainir by first-round technical knockout.[4]

On October 9, 2015, Thani defeated Hisham Hiba by submission via rear-naked choke in the first round at ONE Championship: Tigers of Asia.[5]

On January 29, 2016, he submitted James Kouame via rear-naked choke in the second round at ONE Championship: Clash of Heroes.[6]

On May 6, 2016, Thani defeated Brad Robinson by first-round technical knockout at ONE Championship: Ascent to Power.[7]

On September 2, 2016, he defeated Trestle Tan by submission via rear-naked choke in the first round at ONE Championship: Unbreakable Warriors.[8]

On February 14, 2017, Agilan Thani defeated Jeff Huang at ONE Championship: Throne of Tigers by submission via rear-naked choke in the second round.[9] At this point, Thani was enjoying a dominant start to his MMA career, being undefeated at 6–0.

Thani received his first big break when he challenged Ben Askren for the ONE Welterweight World Championship at ONE Championship: Dynasty of Heroes.[10][11] On May 26, 2019, Agilan Thani lost to Ben Askren by first-round submission via arm-triangle choke, denying him a world title.[12]

Agilan Thani rebounded with a unanimous decision victory over Sherif Mohamed at ONE Championship: Quest for Greatness on August 18, 2017.[13]

On March 9, 2018, Thani defeated Amitesh Chaubey by second-round submission via kimura at ONE Championship: Visions of Victory.[14]

On July 13, 2018, Agilan Thani lost to future ONE Welterweight World Champion Zebaztian Kadestam by third-round technical knockout at ONE Championship: Pursuit of Power.[15]

On December 7, 2018, Thani lost to another future Welterweight World Champion, Kiamrian Abbasov, by submission via rear-naked choke in the first round.[16]

On June 15, 2019, Thani defeated Dream and UFC veteran Yoshihiro Akiyama at ONE Championship: Legendary Quest by unanimous decision, where Agilan Thani was able to dominate a vast majority of the fight.[17][18][19]

On October 13, 2019, Agilan Thani lost by split decision to Yushin Okami, another UFC and PRIDE veteran, at ONE Championship: Century.[20]

Agilan Thani was scheduled to face Mohammad Karaki at ONE Championship: Mark Of Greatness on December 6, 2019.[21] However, Karaki would later be replaced by Dante Schiro.[22] Despite taking the fight on short notice, Schiro was able to keep the fight close and Thani narrowly defeated Dante Schiro by split decision.[23][24]
