Agit-Prop Records

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

This article refers to the United Kingdom based record label and should not be confused with Agitprop! Records.

Agit-Prop Records was an independent record label founded in 1985 by the members of the punk band Chumbawamba.

History[edit]

Before starting the label, Chumbawamba had distributed their records and tapes using the Sky and Trees label. The band used the label to release and distribute a number of cassettes and booklets by themselves (see also Cassette Culture), including their early demo recordings Be Happy Despite It All (1983), Another Year Of The same Old Shit (1984) and the 'cassette single' "Common Ground" (1984), which was a benefit for striking miners (see UK miners' strike (1984-1985)). They also released material by other anarcho-punk performers, including their 'sister' band The Passion Killers, Antidote and an animal rights benefit compilation, The Animals Packet. The only vinyl release on Sky and Trees was Chumbawamba singer Danbert Nobacon's solo album The Unfairy Tale (1985).

Agit-Prop was run in co-op form adhering to anarchist philosophy.

Agit-Prop released its last album, Shhh, in 1992. Chumbawamba felt it was too much work to maintain a band and a label. Band member Alice Nutter adds:

We realised long ago while still running Agit-Prop that we were existing within a capitalist system, and belonging to a small but pure indie ghetto wasn't going to have any effect other than making us feel holy.[1] The label was disbanded, and Chumbawamba signed onto One Little Indian Records.

Name[edit]

The term "agit prop" originates from the Soviet Union's Department for Agitation and Propaganda.
