Aglet (app)

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Aglet combines geo-location and community to encourage walking in real life as part of the app’s core functionality. The game turns a player’s physical steps into Aglet, the app’s in-game currency, which can be used to purchase and collect virtual sneakers from major brands like Adidas, New Balance, Vans, and Yeezy.

The Origin Story

Aglet was founded in 2019 by Ryan David Mullins (adidas, oolipo) and Owen Batt (Loc8). Mullins and Batt met at oolipo where Batt was the CTO and Product Officer, and Mullins served as CEO[1]. They shared a vision that would later form the backbone of Aglet: to reimagine the commerce experience by fusing virtual and physical worlds using location-based gameplay.

In 2019, Ryan Mullins resigned as Director of Future Trends at adidas. In October of 2019, Mullins and Batt moved full-time into building Aglet, a smartphone app Mullins described as “Pokémon Go, but for sneakers.”[2] Mullins recruited a small international team (Australia, Germany, UK, United States) to release Aglet worldwide on April 12th, 2020.

onlife

onlife is Aglet’s parent company and is responsible for Aglet’s expansion into metaverse applications. CEO and co-Founder Ryan David Mullins explains, "We're not online or offline. We are onlife now. And there is no unplugging."[3]

Tech and Development

In the game, players navigate using a geo-location map that allows them to explore the real physical world while accessing Treasure Stashes containing: Aglet, Gold Aglet, Virtual Sneakers, and real sneakers. In-game promotions routinely give away real sneakers as part of the rewards system.

NFTs

Three years prior to becoming Aglet, the company was called “Sneakercrypt”.[4] and sought to put virtual sneakers on the blockchain. Aglet elected to focus less on NFTs and more on experiences with NFTs, digital assets, new commerce and creation. In a statement announcing an in-game NFT contest, Mullins discussed being an active participant in a new industry. “We think we have an experience that can provide some utility and democratize access to NFTs,” Mullins said[4]

Creativity

Aglet hosts a Creator’s Month during which players submit their own custom digital sneaker designs. Designs from the finalists have their design featured in the Aglet App. The Aglet showcases designs to eventually bring them to the real world..[5] Aglet provides a creative platform for existing brands and for new sneaker creators to give users virtual retail shops inside the gaming world[4]
