Agnes Kagure Kariuki (born 1974) is a Kenyan insurance executive and businesswoman.[1] She is the founder and Managing Principal of The Insurance Consulting Group (ICG), an independent insurance agency in Kenya. Before founding ICG, Agnes was the Executive Financial Advisor at CFC Stanbic, and was involved in the merger between American Life Insurance Company (ALICO) and CFC Bank to form CFC Life Assurance Limited.[1]
Early life and education[edit]
Kariuki was born in 1974 in Gitathii-ini village in Nyeri County.[1] She attended Tetu Girls primary school until 1989 after which she proceeded to Kangubiri High School where she obtained a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) in 1993.[1] Kariuki graduated with a Bachelor's of Arts degree from Chiang Mai Rajabhat University (Thailand), in 2014.[2]
Career[edit]
After completing high school studies in Nyeri, Kariuki moved to Nairobi in 1995 to work as a sales associate with American Life Insurance Company (Kenya) Limited – ALICO[1] now Liberty Holdings Limited. She moved from a sales associate to a senior agency manager in 2000. In November 2004 she was involved in the merger between her company ALICO and CFC Bank into CFC Life Assurance Limited.[1] A year later, she was named an executive financial advisor, a post she held until 2011 when she left the company.[1]
On March 18, 2018, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko included Kariuki in his published "short list" of 22 candidates to potentially be appointed as Deputy Governor of Nairobi, after the resignation of the previous Deputy Governor Polycarp Igathe.[3] An article in Nairobi News said that sources were saying Governor Sonko was set to name Ms Kariuki as his new deputy and was "likely to forward Ms Kariuki's name to the County Assembly on Wednesday or Thursday [21 or 22 March] for approval."[4] Timothy Muriuki, a former Chairman of the Nairobi Central Business District Association, advised Sonko to appoint someone well versed with business in Nairobi, and said "I vouch for Mrs Agnes Kagure Kariuki the award winning Insurance expert."[3] An article in the Daily Nation said "it is Ms Kariuki who has received the most attention" for the post, but said the attention was "sometimes for the wrong reasons", as her involvement in land disputes with recent court cases may stand in the way of her consideration for the post.[5]
Land disputes[edit]
Kariuki was involved in a land dispute in 2017 over a 5.2 acre property that she claimed to have purchased in 2011 from a Mr Roger Bryan Robson before his death in 2012. The National Land Commission report on the matter in September 2017 said that her claim to have purchased the property was not valid, saying "The disputed signatures being the 2011 Conveyance, Contract and Letter allegedly from Robson to Agnes Kariuki are all forgeries, as they fundamentally differ in all characteristics from Mr Roger B Robson's style of writing. The author of the forged signatures has a higher pen speed that Mr Robson could not attain at the time the documents were signed due to his age save for his health," and "Uniquely, this questionable conveyance was not stamped and registered until November 6, 2014, which is three years late in which no penalties are attracted. That is abnormal. The Registrar whose signature has been appended on the Conveyance has also disowned the signature as a forgery. No Day Book Number Entry exists for this document and there is no entry for Stamp Duty either. Agnes Kagure Kariuki's conveyance document is an outright forgery."[6][7]
Personal life[edit]
Kariuki is married and is a mother of two children.[1] She lives with her family in Nairobi.
Honors and awards[edit]
In 2011, Kariuki was named by Business Daily Africa to their "Top 40 women under 40" annual list of women who have risen to occupy positions of influence in Kenya before the age of 40.[8][not in citation given]
She was named by the Association of Kenya Insurers (AKI) as Agent of the Year for 2009,[9] 2010,[10] 2011,[11] and 2013.[12]
