Agneta Hultman

Background

Agneta Hultman, married to Matz Eklund, disappeared on June 21, 2022, near Vimmerby.[1] A few weeks earlier, Agneta had been diagnosed with depression and anxiety[2]. Agneta was taking sleeping pills and anti-anxiety medication. Agneta sought help for her mental health after being persuaded by her partner and children. The couple had been together for over 30 years, and they had two daughters.

Disappearance

On June 21, 2022, Matz Eklund came home from Kalmar to the couple's house[2] outside Vimmerby and discovered that Agneta was not home. Agneta had chosen to stay home that day. She wanted to rest, go out and walk, as she often did according to her partner. Her partner Matz called Agneta during the day, but Agneta did not answer. Her daughter Gabriella then called Agneta, but she did not get an answer either. Gabriella then called her aunt, who lived nearby. The aunt went to the house, but she discovered the house empty. The aunt went down to a nearby lake, and there the aunt found a bag. The aunt then called Matz, and told him that she had found a bag by the lake. The bag contained clothes, shoes and glasses.[3] A witness is said to have seen a woman walking on a road near the area, but it was unclear whether it was Agneta. A mobile phone mast picked up a signal from Agneta's mobile phone on June 21, before the phone died at around 4:00 p.m. The mobile phone mast is said to have had a radius of half a mile. On June 23, police dog patrols searched the area around the mast, but no evidence was found. Shortly after, the police wrote off the case as a drowning accident, but the family continued the search with the help of private organizations. However, the police carried out a search operation around the lake together with a search dog on June 29.[4]

Private investigations

On July 24, a search was carried out by Missing People[5], but no trace of Agneta was found. Divers also searched the lake, but they found no trace of Agneta or her body. Later in the fall of 2022, a body was observed in Lake Möckeln, and the police and divers then searched for the body, but no trace of the observed body was found. In October, search dogs responded both at the lake by their home and at the lake Möckeln.

Theories

The case garnered a lot of media attention, and people immediately began to speculate.[6] Agneta's partner, Matz, quickly became the main suspect among people online. A person on flashback stated that Matz was laying a new concrete floor in the garage when Agneta disappeared, which led people to speculate that he had something to do with Agneta's disappearance, and that perhaps he had hid her body underneath the concrete. However, the police were early to rule out suspicions of foul play in the investigation, and there is no evidence that Matz had anything to do with Agneta's disappearance.
