Agrigento Painter

The Agrigento Painter was a 5th Century Greek red-figure vase painter active in Athens from 470-440BC. He belonged to the Mannerist school, and was a pupil of the Pig Painter. He was named by Beazley after a calyx-krater in Agrigento.

Influence

Some of the Later Mannerists appear to have been influenced by the Agrigento Painter. For instance, the Nausicaa Painter adopted the posture of a Satyr on vase N.9 from figures drawn by the Agrigento Painter. The Nausicaa Painter's depiction of ears seems to adopt from the Agrigento Painter, such as a painting of a woman's ear on N.17. This detail bears close similarities to an ear on a bell-krater by the Agrigento Painter.

Similarly, a column-krater by the Orestes Painter depicts a woman with a posture Mannack likened to a vase by the Agrigento Painter

The painter's early vases are similar to the Pig Painter, his teacher.
