Ahmed Belal[edit]

Born in Alexandria, Egypt, Ahmed Belal (October 26, 1949 - February 23, 2019) (احمد فوزى السيد بلال) was an Egyptian-American artist. Throughout his lifetime, he created calligraphic Arabic artwork and developed an expertise in the Kufic style for over 40 years. A pioneer of Islamic calligraphic art in the United States, Belal came to America in 1976 and shared his work at various exhibitions celebrating America’s diversity. Belal constantly shared his love for calligraphic art forms and believed its potential outside the Muslim world was far greater for the positive perception of Islam. Belal hoped that one day his art would motivate the hearts and minds of others, as calligraphers before him motivated his work. Belal's art pieces can be seen in various exhibitions, galleries, and mosques all over the world.[1]

Death[edit]

He died tragically on February 23, 2019 in a drowning incident in L.A. Fitness in Greenbelt, Maryland.
