Ahonsi Unuigbe (born 18 June 1976) is a Nigerian entrepreneur and founder of Petralon Energy, an indigenous oil and gas company and operator of the Dawes Island Field in Rivers State.[1][2][3] He is the chairman of the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX).[4][5]
Early life and education
Unuigbe was born in Lagos, Nigeria, in 1976. He studied Economics at the University of Sussex in 1998 and obtained a Master of Science in International Securities and Investment Banking from the ICMA Centre at the University of Reading in 2000.[6]
Career
Early career
Unuigbe started his career in investment banking at Citibank in the United Kingdom and later at Stanbic IBTC Bank. In 2011, he joined indigenous oil and gas exploration company, First Hydrocarbon Nigeria, as the company's Chief Financial Officer.[7]
Public sector
Unuigbe was Commissioner for Budget, Planning, and Economic Development in Edo State during the Adams Oshiomole administration between 2010 and 2011.[8][9]
Petralon Energy
Ahonsi Unigbe founded Petralon Energy in 2014 after stepping down from his role at First Hydrocarbon.[10] He led the company to secure Petroleum Prospecting License No. 259 (PPL 259) to operate the Dawes-Island marginal field.[11][12][13]
In July 2021, the licence was overturned by the Committee on Public Petitions House of Representatives.[14] The company regained PPL 259 following the passage of Nigeria's Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) in August 2021.[15]
