AiFi is a technology company based in Burlingame, California. It produces computer vision software for retailers, allowing stores to operate without cashiers or physical checkout stations. The company's technology is used in convenience stores, sports stadiums, and university campuses.
History
AiFi was founded in 2016 by Steve Gu and Ying Zheng. Both founders previously worked as researchers for Apple and Google.
The company announced its first cashierless store technology in February 2018. At the time, industry analysts noted the system was intended to compete with Amazon Go by offering a solution that could be installed in existing retail footprints.[1]
In March 2022, the company secured $65 million in Series B funding. The investment round was led by Verizon Ventures and included retail partners such as ALDI South Group and Żabka.[2]
João Diogo Falcão, a co-founder, was named Chief Executive Officer in September 2025.[3]
Technology
The company uses camera systems to track products in a store. When a customer picks up an item, computer vision software identifies the product and adds it to a digital cart. Unlike some competing systems that require shelf sensors to detect weight changes, AiFi uses cameras as the primary tracking method.[4] Payment is processed automatically when the customer leaves the store.
Deployments
AiFi technology is installed in public venues and retail chains.
- Sports Venues: The Intuit Dome in Los Angeles uses the system for its concession stands. A 2024 report stated that the venue operates over 40 distinct stores using the camera network.[5]
- Retail Partnerships: In Europe, the company partnered with the Polish chain Żabka to create "Żabka Nano" autonomous stores.
- Grocery: In 2022, the company launched a checkout-free grocery store in London with ALDI South Group.[6]
