Ailiph Doepa (アイリフドーパ, Airifu Dōpa, short: "Doepa") are a four-piece Japanese alternative rock band, founded in 2010.[1]
History
Originally, the band was formed with the ulterior motive of copying the American nu metal band Limp Bizkit.[2] All the members had met each other at a music college.[3]
The name of the band was formed from an anagram of the English term "pedophilia". The stage names of the members, whose civil names are not known, were all made up by the singer and songwriter, Eyegargoyle. According to his own statement, he thought them up during an inspiring two-hour stay in a Bamiyan restaurant.[2][3][4]
Ailiph Doepa released their first record "Million Seller Album" in November 2011, followed by the works "CURSE OF ART" (2014), "Ailiph Doepa" (2016) and "OXYGEN" (2018). Most recently (2020), they released the double album "Exormantis" / "Plasma 〜the world〜" on the independent record label "INNOVATOR RECORDS".
In 2018, Ailiph Doepa made it to the line-up of the prestigious "DEAD POP FESTiVAL" in the city of Kawasaki, after having succeeded in a band casting.[5]
In December 2020, former drummer of Dream Theater Mike Portnoy commented positively on his Instagram profile about the double album "Exormantis" / "Plasma 〜the world〜",[6] bringing the band attention in the West for the first time in their career.
Style
Ailiph Doepa mix elements of Nu metal, heavy metal, pop-punk, J-pop and ska punk in their eclectic music. The basic tone of their songs is a chaotic one, characterized by regular breaks in style, and the overall concept is based primarily on satire and persiflage. In their lyrics, Japanese and English text parts alternate. Mike Portnoy called Ailiph Doepa the "craziest band you've never heard of" and placed them stylistically "somewhere between" bands like System of a Down, Korn and Mr. Bungle.[6] In addition to System of a Down, singer Eyegargoyle also cited the commercially successful Japanese nu metal band Maximum the Hormone as the main source of inspiration for his compositions.[4]
Visually, Ailiph Doepa present themselves in parodic reference to the Visual Kei movement in make-up and colorful, sometimes clownish costumes. Their music videos are usually characterized by fast cuts and wild image and animation collages.
