Accident[edit]

On September 11 2018, Air India Flight 101 was a scheduled passenger flight from Delhi to New York. The Pilot's were Captains Rustom Palia and Sushant Singh, First Officers Vikas and DS Bhatti. There were 170 passengers on board. The Pilot's were using the Polar Route which run's over Pakistan, Afghanistan, Russia, Finland, Greenland and Canada. In New York it was morning and the people were beginning to start their prayers for the September 11 Twin tower Attacks. At that time Air India flight 101 was preparing its final approach into JFK. The skies of New York had a cloud ceiling of 200 feet. At that time, the aircraft's ILS systems failed. After a few minutes, the aircraft's TCAS (Traffic Collision Avoidance System) also failed. ILS helps guide pilots while landing a plane especially when they are unable to establish visual contact with the runway especially during a cloudy or foggy day.[2]

Captain Palia and the Crew could not use non- precision approach so instead they used the LNAV (Lateral Navigation) and VNAV ( Vertical Navigation). Captain Palia contacted JFK tower and told the condition of their plane, The tower diverted them to Newark ( Newark Liberty International Airport)[3]. So the captain announced a go around JFK because it was too risky to land without a non- functioning ILS. The pilots were now faced with another serious issue, fast depleting fuel. After its non-stop flight from New Delhi, the plane was left with about 7.3 tonnes of fuel, or one hour of fuel. When the plane descended faster the speed started to rise. The pilot's then stabled the plane. At Newark the cloud base was 400 feet instead of 200 in New York. The Pilot's landed the plane safely. About 15-20 minutes after the plane's engine switched off, it started raining in newark. There were no injuries or fatalities.[4]
