Aiways (Chinese: 爱驰汽车有限公司), an electric-vehicle startup based in Shanghai, China, was founded in 2016 by Fu Qian, formerly China sales chief of Volvo cars.
In August 2019, Aiways acquired a 50 percent stake in Chinese domestic automaker Jiangling Holdings. Jiangling was relaunched as a 50–25–25 three-way partnership with Aiways, Jiangling Motors Corporation Group, and Changan Automobile. Aiways paid 1.75 billion yuan ($248 million) acquiring the stake, according to information disclosed by Changan Automobiles. The deal enables Aiways to obtain a license to produce EVs from China regulators and to use Jiangling’s auto production plant to increase output.[3]
One of the company's first models, the U5, was released in November 2018 and has been approved for the EU market.[4]
The 4.7 meter crossover SUV has a 140 kW motor on the front axle with a range of 460 kilometers according to NEDC. The WLTA certification makes it the first Chinese electric vehicle that can be sold in the European Union. Two Aiways U5 crossovers had driven more than 15,000 kilometers from Xian, China through Russia, Scandinavia, Denmark, and France to reach Frankfurt in the end.[5] The U5 is planned to be made available to the left-hand-drive European market in April 2020.[6]
